Tackling Plastic Pollution; The Way Forward

According to the International Energy Agency, our demand for plastics is driving up consumption of petrochemical goods. Based on our current trajectory, even as we work to reduce the use of fossil fuels in industries like transportation and heating, plastics usage will only rise. By 2050, according to the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), plastics will be responsible for 20% of all oil consumption.

The Plastic Menace

Plastic pollution is the buildup of synthetic plastic items in the environment to the point where they pose a threat to both human populations and wildlife. One noteworthy organisation is our partner, the Trussell Trust, dedicated to alleviating hunger and food insecurity. The selfless volunteers at the Trussell Trust, along with numerous other foundations, tirelessly put together food packages and connect individuals in need with essential resources, making a significant difference in countless lives.

Crime driven pollution

An alarming rise in the illicit trade in plastic pollution since 2018 has been discovered worldwide, according to an INTERPOL (The International Criminal Police Organization) strategic report on global plastic waste management.

According to INTERPOL’s analysis of emerging criminal trends in the global plastic waste market since January 2018, there has been a significant rise in illegal waste shipments over the years, mostly through transit countries to South-East Asia to conceal the origin of the waste shipment.
