Day 2 of Her Executive Edge: Thinking Bigger Than the Horizon

Day 1 reminded us that women belong at the table. Day 2 challenged us to think beyond the table and imagine what is possible when vision meets execution at an extraordinary scale.

As part of Her Executive Edge, we visited the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, and one thing became immediately clear: no photograph, article, or headline can adequately prepare you for the magnitude of what stands in Lekki.

The refinery is more than an industrial facility. It is a statement of ambition.

The largest single-train refinery in the world, it was built to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day and has already been tested beyond that threshold at 700,000 barrels per day. Today, it is rapidly establishing itself as a global player in fuel exports, delivering products from Nigeria to international markets. And the journey is far from over, with plans underway to further expand capacity and deepen its impact on global energy supply.

Walking through the facility, the scale of the engineering achievement was impossible to ignore. Yet beyond the infrastructure, machinery, and technology, there was an even greater lesson for all of us.

For a room filled with women preparing for leadership and boardroom excellence, the message was unmistakable:

Big visions are not built in a day.

They are built through patience when progress feels slow. Through conviction when others cannot yet see the destination. Through resilience when obstacles appear. And most importantly, through the courage to dream bigger than anyone believes you should.

The Dangote Refinery stands as proof that transformative ideas begin with the willingness to think differently and act boldly.

Our sincere appreciation goes to Mr. David Bird, CEO, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals (DPRP); Mr. Bruce Tanner, Chief Financial Officer, DPRP; Mr. Murat Eden, Group Chief Financial Officer, Dangote Industries Limited; Ms. Betul Sarikaya; and the entire Dangote Refinery team for opening your doors to us.

Thank you for sharing your journey, your insights, and your commitment to excellence. More importantly, thank you for showing us what world-class achievement looks like when it is designed, built, and delivered from Nigeria to the world.

As we conclude Day 2 of Her Executive Edge, one thing is certain: every conversation, every visit, and every lesson is expanding our perspective of what leadership can achieve.

Two days in, and the horizon keeps getting wider.
